The real question: how many days a year it will work
An owned forklift costs the same whether it works every day or sits parked half the year. So the decision starts with use: count how many days last year you really needed to move pallets or heavy loads, and whether it was steady or in peaks. If it was daily, buying may pay off. If it came in peaks — unloading a container, high season, one job — renting usually wins, because you pay only for the period you use it.
What owning a forklift costs beyond the purchase
- Preventive maintenance by hour-meter hours, and repairs when it breaks down.
- Tyres, forks and mast chains, which wear with use.
- Fuel or power, and a place to store and refuel or charge it.
- A trained operator of your own, every time it's used.
- The days it sits in the shop, with no other machine to cover for it.
- Idle money: what you pay for the machine is no longer available for your operation.
When renting makes sense
- A job or project with a start and end date.
- Peaks: high season, stock counts, container unloading, warehouse moves.
- Your forklift is in the shop and the operation can't stop.
- You want to test whether you really need one before buying.
- You have nobody to maintain it: in a rental it's included.
When buying makes sense
If you're buying, ConstruMarket, the group company, sells new Hangcha forklifts and has two guides to help you choose: which forklift you need (diesel, LPG or electric) and what an electric one costs to run against a combustion one. They're linked at the end of this guide.
- It works every day, one or more shifts, in your warehouse or plant.
- You have your own operator and an hour-based maintenance plan.
- You need something the rental fleet doesn't have: electric for an enclosed warehouse, more than 2.5 t or a tall mast for racking.
- You ran the full numbers — not just the purchase price — and they work.
How the forklift rents at RentaCentro
In El Salvador the fleet has 2 Hangcha 2.5-tonne forklifts, combustion trucks on pneumatic tyres: they work in yards, on sites, ramps and truck unloading. Per the maker's datasheet they lift 2,500 kg with the load centre at 500 mm and, with the standard mast, lift 3 m; each unit's mast is confirmed when you quote. For an enclosed warehouse or around food an electric truck is the right call, and the fleet doesn't have one; for moving loads at floor level indoors there's the 2.5 t hydraulic pallet truck.
It rents from one day, and the daily rate covers 8 machine hours read on the hour meter; also by the week, by the month and on 6-to-24-month contracts. Maintenance is included; fuel and freight are extra. To rent it, a company presents its tax ID and signs the contract, and an individual leaves a security deposit. Whoever runs it must be trained on forklifts: the group's academy, Academia APMT, certifies operators.
Common mistakes
- Comparing the purchase price against rent without counting maintenance, operator and shop days.
- Renting by the round capacity: the plate rules, and capacity drops with long or off-centre loads.
- Taking a combustion forklift into an enclosed warehouse with no ventilation.
- Not measuring the lowest door or the highest stacking level before quoting.
- Putting it in the hands of someone who isn't trained on forklifts.
