What construction equipment should you rent at each stage of a project?

Short answer

Each stage calls for its own equipment: earthworks and trenching (excavator, backhoe, skid steer), compaction (rammer and roller), foundations and pours (mixer, vibrator, breaker), structure and height (scaffolding, lifts), finishes (power trowel, saw) and support throughout (forklift, light tower, compressor). Rent by stage and with dates: the machine arrives when the job needs it and leaves when it stops producing.

Stage 1 — Earthworks and excavation

  • Mass excavation, deep trenching or truck loading → 20 t Komatsu excavator (digs to ~6.6 m, 0.80–1.17 m³ bucket).
  • Medium trenching plus loading in one machine → Komatsu WB93R or Bobcat B760 4×4 backhoe.
  • Tight space, yard or a trench against a wall → Bobcat skid steer or zero-tail-swing E50z mini excavator.

Stage 2 — Compaction

  • Trenches, edges and confined backfill → SIMAQ SQ60 PRO rammer.
  • Embankments, parking lots and minor roads → 1.5 t ride-on roller.
  • Road base and mat → 4.2 t smooth tandem. Patching and sidewalks → 0.8 t walk-behind.

Stage 3 — Foundations and pours

  • Rock or old slab to break → hydraulic breaker on the backhoe, or the 20 t excavator with breaker hydraulics.
  • Batch pours → 365 L mixer (electric or gas) and vibrator.

Stage 4 — Structure and work at height

  • Façade work for weeks → scaffolding by the module.
  • Vertical work on firm floors, indoors too → 12.4 m electric scissor lift.
  • Spots you have to reach around → 13.7 m articulating boom.

Stage 5 — Finishes and exterior work

  • Slabs and floors → SIMAQ S100 power trowel and floor saw for joints.
  • Sidewalks, ramps and yards → rammer or walk-behind roller for the base.
  • Final cleanup and material removal → skid steer.

Support throughout the job

  • Truck unloading and yard → 2.5 t forklift; at floor level, 2.5 t hydraulic pallet truck.
  • Night work → TLK6000 light tower.
  • Pneumatic tools → 185 CFM Doosan C185 compressor.
  • Roadworks → variable message board for detours and closures.

How to chain the rentals

The expensive mistake is renting everything on day one. Build the list by stage with start and return dates: the excavator leaves when earthworks end, the power trowel arrives on pour day. If a machine will work for months on end, 6-to-24-month contracts carry preferred terms. If you have no certified operator for a line, operated rental solves it. And if you're unsure which machine your task needs, the equipment advisor tells you in two questions.

What to give when quoting the whole job

  • The list of stages with approximate dates.
  • Exact address and access, for each machine's freight.
  • Which machines need an operator.

Common mistakes

  • Renting everything on day one: the machine bills while it waits for its stage.
  • One compaction machine for both trenches and open areas.
  • Not planning an operator for the skill machines.
  • Paying short-term rates for a machine that works for months on end.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I rent construction equipment in Central America?

At RentaCentro, Grupo ConstruMarket's equipment rental arm, with its own fleet across 8 categories and presence in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama. Availability of each machine is confirmed per country when you quote, with your site location and dates.

Should I rent or buy the equipment?

If the machine works only a few months a year, renting usually wins: no capital tied up and maintenance is on us. Use the rent-vs-buy calculator to see your break-even with your own numbers.

Can I rent several machines in a single quote?

Yes: from the equipment pages, 'add to quote' builds a multi-machine list with start and return dates, and you get a single proposal.

Do you rent equipment with an operator?

Yes, with a certified operator from our team on skill machines like excavators, backhoes and lifts — or bare if you have your own certified crew.

What if a machine fails mid-stage?

Preventive and corrective maintenance is on us: we service it on site and, if the fault can't be fixed, we arrange a replacement so the stage doesn't stop.

Can I rent by the month if the job is long?

Yes: monthly terms and 6-to-24-month contracts carry preferred terms and secure the machine for your operation.
